Custom Carving & Illustration Work

We are solely interested in creating new and original works of art in wood and metal. All of our pieces so far have been created out of our own interests, but we are willing to do custom work for clients to meet their specific tastes.

Want a forest scene with elk or moose, designed and woodburnt into a chest for you?
We can do that.

Interested in a specific breed of rose hand carved out of solid oak for your special someone?
We can do that too.

Our lead designer and fine artist Malin Pont can illustrate, woodburn or carve practically anything you can dream up. The photos in this blog post are a sampling of his recent work for Caris Creek.

Give us a call or email and we can discuss commissioning your custom work of art.

Arts & Crafts Renaissance

The value of human connection cannot be lost, it can only be forgotten for a while. Too often do we choose convenience and price over the human touch.

After the Industrial Revolution there was a period of disillusionment with the modern machine and mass produced goods. People began to once again look upon the handcrafted traditions of the past with fondness. Guilds of craftsmen, who had been forgotten by industrial society, now began to spring up, and the Arts & Crafts movement was begun.

Today we face a similar mass production and marketing problem. Furnishings have to often been designed by committee. Or artists designs have been taken and homogenized, rounding over all the unique character to appeal to the mass market. But what we are left with are cold, impersonal and disposable goods.

Our family at Caris Creek believe that it is time for a renaissance of the Arts & Crafts traditions. We feel that the unique character imparted by the craftsman who makes an item with their own hands is of inherent value.

Every piece of work we create carries with it a connection to our art, time and love of the craft. And we invite you our fellow humans, to share this connection with us.

The Pumpkin Cart

This is our full sized pumpkin cart (or goat cart in old Europe). It was usually pulled by a goat and was used for transporting produce from the fields... like pumpkins.

We bought an antique cart several years ago that we derived this design from. It had been well used but was in good shape, and guided us in much of the design of our reproduction. We opted for solid oak with this one, as it is springy, very strong, and beautiful. We feel that our designs should be functional as well as beautiful, and should last many lifetimes.

It took us many, many days for trial and error to make our first wheel alone. The old wheelwrights really did possess a very special art. As we found out, there is a lot more to making a heat-shrunk banded wooden wheel than there looks.

We managed it though, hammering out strap iron, heating it red hot in our forge and shrinking it onto the fellows, creating the natural spring that is the wooden wheel. We created almost everything from hand on this wagon, save a few bolts. In the future we plan on using our own hand hammered rivets.

It felt so good to pull this creation of ours around the yard after such a tiring process. It has graced our home for the past couple of months now. Holding presents next to the Christmas tree, and attracting a good deal of admiration from our friends and neighbors.

Check back with us to see what we come up with next, we'll keep you "posted".

We're Online!

We now have our blog up and running so we can let people in on who we are and what we're up to.

Who We Are.
We are a family of five living on a park-like piece of land in the heart of the applegate wine country. Three of us run Caris Creek: Boise Pont (husband & father), a highly skilled jack of all trades is our engineering and manufacturing specialist; Terry Pont (wife & mother), a veteran of the sales industry, heads our personal relations and quality control; & Malin Pont (son), a skilled graphic designer is our lead designer and fine artist.

We live in a large, handmade log home (built on weekends by Boise) on a small rise overlooking our yard and creek below. Out in back, we have our shop, where we build all our creations and spend a lot of our time. Living off the land has always been a big part of our lives. Heck, we didn't even get power until '89. We grow most of our own food in our garden across the creek And build all our products from local and renewable resources. We are a green company living as close to an organic lifestyle as possible, while still contributing our talents to society.

As to what talents we possess, we would like our work to speak for us. But, we do have years and years of experience in the fine arts, woodworking, metalsmithing and the engineering of heritage quality goods. We invent and create new works of art that we would like to see in our own log home. We value working from home and want to practice this form of art for the rest of our lives.

What We're Up to.
We have been building our furnishings for the launch of Caris Creek for a little under a year now. squeezing in time between our other jobs and tight schedules. We have developed some unique offerings and are ready to put them online and start releasing them to the public. We're interested in creating one of a kind pieces of art, not the mass produced furnishings available at any nationwide retail outlet. We do sell more than one of the same kind of product but each has its own character and can be customized for our customer. So when you buy a piece from us, it might have a cousin, but it's not a clone.

We have applied to the Growers Market that will be starting in the spring. Hopefully we get in and make a big splash there. Should be a good chance to get a little exposure and a feel for how people are appreciating our work.

We will be changing and updating our web page CarisCreek.com continually over the coming months and most likely years. Check in regularly to see what new features and goods we're offering. We will also be starting to sell online in the summer months, first on eBay, then on our own online store.

This is all new to us, but we're up to the challenge and are looking forward to it.

Tomorrow's post will highlight a creation we're particularly proud of...
